Silicon Valley is known for innovation and entrepreneurship, and is now being recognized for its manufacturing.
San Jose was listed as the #1 city for manufacturing in the United States, based on total manufacturing employment, annual wages, manufacturing jobs as a percentage of the workforce and employment growth rates.
San Jose beat out Tulsa, Oklahoma, Los Angeles, Houston and Indianapolis for the top spot.
Apparently, San Jose has 77,000 manufacturing jobs in largely electronics, renewable energy, machining and high-tech advanced manufacturing. This accounts for 18% of the total workforce in San Jose.
Manufacturing would be pretty far down on the list of industries I would think San Jose would be known for. The most interesting criteria factored in for this rating San Jose received is the opportunity for continued employment growth in this area.
San Jose has become a more central location for expanding tech companies. Now it is also a standout for manufacturing that goes along with the tech sector. I'm interested to see how this industry grows in coming years!
